About the Restaurant
Takahiro Hirai was born in Kyushu, Japan’s Southern-most island. He studied economics at a university in Tokyo before coming to the United States to perfect his English. While in the states, he worked at well-known sushi restaurants in Miami Beach and Nantucket before moving to New Jersey in 1997. It was here that Takahiro joined the staff of Kessler’s Catering and started making sushi for large events. Soon after, he opened Taka in Asbury Park, NJ.
Today, Taka’s beautifully designed location on Cookman Avenue is a go-to spot for fantastic food and cocktails. The restaurant even has a full-service lounge that’s perfect for late night sushi and sake. Cheers!
The Menu
Taka’s menu is not like most Japanese restaurants. Here, you’ll see appetizers like Caesar salad (with Asian-style dressing) sharing space with a list of sushi rolls, tempura, and sashimi. Feel free to start your meal off with a few small plates, then order a helping of Takahiro’s famous boneless short ribs. These tender beauties are served with fresh haricot vert and spicy wasabi whipped potatoes. You can also try the chicken katsu, tuna, or cast-iron tofu steak. We promise each dish will leave you feeling full and satisfied.
Dessert is an absolute must at Taka. All of their sweet treats are made in house, including the ever-changing selection of sorbets. Not sure what to order? We recommend the green tea cheesecake, which features a creamy, Philly-style batter and just a hint of green tea. Yum!
